It's 11 AM. And M~'s family home it's virtually pitch-black
It's same for them almost all day, everyday
And now that's because even though they've got a electricity, they can't afford to use it to light up their home.
It's the same story for almost everybody living in the slum
And that's because electricity price is here in the Philippines ~ most expensive in Asia.
But this is providing at least temporary solution.
Essentially, it's just an old plastic bottle filled with water.
Each light cost a dollar to make.
Firstly, the empty bottle is pushed through a piece of metal.
then it's filled with water and a little bit of bleach to prevent ~ and now say it
They just need to make a hole in the roof of the house, then the moment of truth.
The effect is instant.
The sunlight is refracted by water and spreads out around the room.
It gives about 50 to 60 watts of light, that's more than some electronic light bulbs.
And it means that people here can get on with them cooking and cleaning during the day without turning the electricity.
Local entrepreneur Illac Diaz is the man behind the project.
So how did you come up with this?
Well, we build sustainable schools around the country, and one of the things that is lacking it's not just you know, building it affordably, but keeping it and running like lights, and the ventilation and we could see a lot of school students afford to keep lights.
And how many of these have been installed now around Philippines?
About 4 month ago, there was one family with one light, and now there's about 15,000.
We've gone to about 31 cities and started sharing this technology and we're seeing about 2,000 bottles being installed on roofs every mile(?)
The potential demands for this light is huge. Another country is already showing an interest. It just goes to show that sometimes the brightest ideas can also be really simple.
